PICK YOUR PATH

You must walk for at least fifteen minutes before you spot the first creature in the water. When you turn around, you can no longer see the place where you entered the woods. More worrying is the fact that you can no longer see the stone path with the bright sunlight shining down on it. You hope you haven’t made a mistake getting distracted by the brook.

You sit on the bank of the little brook and remove your sneakers and socks. No reason to have your mother mad at your for showing up at home with soggy shoes.

Wading into the cold water, you feel the silt and sand squoosh between your toes. Now that you’ve disturbed the surface of the water, a whole school of tiny fish slip out from wherever they’ve been hiding.

You quickly pull up your sleeves and start grasping around as their slippery bodies glide between your fingers, evading capture.

Finally, you catch one hold it tightly within your two enclosed hands, but when you peek to see what you’ve caught there’s nothing there. In fact, all of the fish in the water are gone and the water itself begins churning and darkening…
