What Others are Saying ...

logo for the broken spinehas honored us as part of their #IndieLitMagGala 2025 after a nomination from one of our beloved contributors.

“They are struggling through chronic illnesses but still trying to uplift writers’ voices. Even their rejections are thoughtful and respectful.”

Jennifer  (Eine Togi)

Epistemic is a fierce and thoughtful presence in the indie lit world. They publish poetry, flash fiction, and creative nonfiction that explores resistance, nostalgia, anticipation, exclusion—emotional truths that often get softened elsewhere. At Epistemic, they hit at full force.”

Alan Parry (The Broken Spine)

DONATIONS help us reach our goal to pay contributors for their fantastic work and offer a yearly print anthology of our magazine. Right now, we cover all the costs of running Epistemic from our own pockets. Donations can be made using our email address; anything helps.

Meet the Editors

Kidlit novelist and flash fiction junkie, Melissa Rotert fell in love with short fiction as a way of pushing her craft and exploring new ideas. She wanted to provide a space where other writers could build community through literature as they would through conversation. With a shared passion, Melissa and Kristin created  Epistemic Literary.

Kristin Houlihan

Kristin Houlihan stumbled into poetry as a means of coping with major life and health changes and has since embraced the form’s ability to bend itself to individual truths. Her desire to hear and showcase these truths through thought-provoking and beautiful writing led her to partner with Melissa to create Epistemic Literary. Kristin cannot wait to glimpse your heart through your words!

Long before she’d ever heard the term Creative Nonfiction, Genalea began processing life experience through her writing. In recent years she’s developed a love for flash fiction and flash CNF, finding a unique beauty in the brevity.
Genalea understands the vulnerability involved in sharing our stories, and she is both excited to read your submissions, and honored to be part of your journey.
