ESTRANGEMENT

Written by Todd Matson
               Tears well up
as oceans within
only to freeze on my face,
freeze within the narrow canals
of my tear ducts, damming the seven
seas to a bottle washed up on shore, damning
me to solitary in the bitter cold of winter
though surrounded by thousands
under the warmth of the sun,
and all this, all this after
only a few cold words
spoke silence into
the empty space
between us.
