TO ACTAEON, FROM HIS HOUNDS

Written by Lillian Hochwender
Deer, once dearest, with dark
and frightened eye, we chased
you through fen and forest,
Artemis in our ears.
Bacchic as we tore
you sinew from sinew,
we made fast work until
our frantic frenzy passed.
And as we wept and wept,
the Goddess only laughed.
