I WAS LOVED HERE ONCE

Written by Amy Devine
Nobody is promised tomorrow, except me.
I was, here, on the floor of your bedroom.
Here, I held a jealous tongue and, here,
you loaned me your biggest sleep shirt
with the star signs down the back.
We both cried over different deaths and I
would brush your hair whilst imagining
all of the ways I could silence myself with
your sister’s pink hairdryer. Here, I felt
something break and, here, I folded into
a small corner of my life for safekeeping.
And also, here, is where the firewood
of my youth was piled high. Here is everything
that was capable of burning down but didn’t
and there was always a tomorrow
and your dad watering the garden.
