This first issue contains works of poetry and short fiction on the theme of Taking a Stand, intially released as a digital magazine. Each issue is geared towards including a younger audience in the Epistemic conversation and providing educators of all types with the resources to use our content.

With Epistemic Literary it’s important that our issues reflect relatable themes that can resonate with a global audience and artistry, but there is always one group left out of the conversation: children. We created Nimblewitlit to extend our mission to a younger audience. Not only by creating content appropriate for ages 5-14 but by inviting children to submit their own poems, stories, and artwork. We made the decision to pair themes between the two magazines. We knew the next issue of Epistemic would focus on Resistance and felt Taking a Stand was a perfect compliment. Every day we see stories of young people standing up for the values that mean the most to them. They are not only the future, waiting their turn to make change, but often they are the facilitators of change in the present. Marching side-by-side in protest with their parents, leading the way by example to their elders, and reminding us what passion looks like in the face of adversity. They teach us all to fight off indifference and complacency. This issue and this magazine is in honor of our young heroes. Contributors: Finn Rotert, E.H. Perry, Moyato Akintade, Rebecca Loveday, Laura Bradford, Sally Murphy, Lia Benton, Olivia Anne Gennaro, Tracie Renee

Epistemic‘s Integrity issue paired perfectly with Trustworthy for Nimblewitlit. When I consider what it means to be trustworthy, especially as it relates to a younger audience, I often connect it back to the reason we created Nimblewitlit. Kristin and I wanted to give children and teens a voice in a world that so often expects their silence. Growing up hearing adults proclaim that, “children should be seen and not heard,” the rebellious spirit of my own youth wanted to scream out about the things that mattered to me—with no concern for whether or not the adults wanted to hear it.

So what does this have to do with trust? As children, we expect the adults in our lives to provide physical and emotional safety, to listen to our needs, to care for and take care with our feelings. This is a relationship of trust. The most important of our lives and one that we carry with us to each and every relationship we form.

And for those who don’t feel heard? We give you space to scream out and demand the world listen!

We at Nimblewitlit hear you.
